In mid May of 2005 I arrived at the Hotze Health & Wellness Center in Katy, Texas.
By then, I had already endured many years of health concerns and frustrations within the Houston Medical Community.
To encapsulate:
I married my husband in 1996 at age 41. Almost immediately, I began suffering from a variety of 'so-called' middle-aged female ailments. Among them: infertility, miscarriages, hormonal imbalances, higher blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, weight gain, ovarian cysts, fibroids, anemia, fatigue, major hair loss, brittle nails, slowed cognitive function, what I thought to be – IBS, acid reflux, a nonexistent libido and eventually, an unwanted hysterectomy. In short, I was a mess.
I complained openly and often to my Internist and OB/GYN. They (both female) suggested that:
1. This was how life was for middle-aged women.
2. The loss of my once glorious mane of hair was, again, something to expect in middle age.
3. My 'fatigue' was depression. I explained that I was no where near depressed, merely exhausted. I was prescribed Zoloft anyway, as it would relieve my 'flashing.'
4. I questioned my thyroid function. Repeatedly, I was told that I was normal.
Within a month or two, the Zoloft was no longer working for my hot flash symptoms. A nurse friend of mine suggested 'Effexor,' claiming that her 'flashes' were gone. After about 2 1/2 months on Effexor, my hot flashes were gone, but I very nearly was, too. First, I suffered a nasty fall at a friend's home in a 'blackout' of some sort. I notified my doctor immediately, although she never responded. I questioned my pharmacy. Could there have been a reaction? Nothing changed. Four months later, I left my bed at 11 PM to retrieve a glass of water, only to awaken on the kitchen floor after losing consciousness and falling through a wall in my home. Even after a trip to the ER with a broken shoulder, calls to my Internist went unanswered.
I was furious. Why was NO ONE listening to me? I was about to give up and accept what had become of my life. Several months had gone by when, one morning at 5:30 am, my husband awakened me. First he asked, “Please, don't be mad,” then asked when, if ever, would I be available for our business? It was then that I realized that I could not go on as I was. I realized that my poor health had also been happening to him. When he came home that evening, I told him about Dr. Hotze. I told him about all of the years I had been listening to the radio program; thinking alternately that he-Dr. Hotze- was either a “quack” or a genius. I asked my husband what he thought I should do. I told him that the treatment was not covered under our insurance. He told me that if there was even a 'snowballs chance in hell' that I could again become one tenth of the woman he married, he didn't care what it cost. With that, I made an appointment. I cancelled the appointment. I went shopping. (Don't ask.)
I told a sales friend at Neiman’s what I had done. Another salesperson interrupted us. She said that she had overheard our conversation and that, whatever I did I should NOT break my second appointment with Dr. Hotze. Quite honestly, I thought she was crazy. I even asked if she wasn't Dr. Hotze's sister or cousin. She responded that she had known of many women whose lives had been changed by Dr. Hotze. That was all. She claimed she was 'divine intervention.' I laughed…then I kept the second appointment. (P.S. Thank you, Nickie!)
When I finally arrived at the Wellness center, I was introduced to Dr. Ellsworth. Within moments of our meeting I implied that he, too, was probably – here comes that word again – a quack. I told him that for years I had listened to Dr. Hotze's radio program and thought it was a shrewd marketing scheme, if nothing else. At this juncture, he asked me why, if this was how I felt, was I even there?
I told him, as I am telling you, that I had nothing else to lose. I thought, if you can't help me, I am no worse off for trying. Money no longer mattered to me. He told me that he truly believed he could help me. I told him I was willing to follow his instructions. I started the program; and from the fourth day of the yeast-free diet to the present (still following the basic program but no longer on a completely yeast-free diet), my life is like night and day. After nearly seven years of watching helplessly as my health spiraled downhill, I am most definitely “back.”
I cannot thank Dr. Ellsworth, Dr. Hotze and all of the others who have pushed forward toward a more holistic therapeutic response to their patient's ailments. I would never have believed that I could feel as I do now. As a side benefit, I have lost 33 pounds following the program; eating and exercising correctly. I now feel as good as I have ever felt in my entire life. My 'symptoms' are all but gone.
I will never be able to thank you enough for giving me MY life back.
