We tend to hear a lot about women’s hormones and their effects, but little is said about male hormones. Many women don’t realize that the men in their lives go through many hormonal changes as they age, as well. By learning more about how men’s hormones work, women can gain a better understanding of the men in their lives.
Just like women, men face ups and downs throughout their lives due to changes in various types of hormones. Below, you’ll find seven facts about male hormones that every woman should know.
1. Male Hormones Exist In Both Men And Women.
Just as men have some estrogens (female hormones) in their bodies, androgens (male hormones) are present in women, too. In fact, they are essential for estrogen synthesis and help regulate the functions of many organs.
2. Testosterone Is More Than Just A Sex Hormone.
Testosterone is known for being the hormone that gives men their male characteristics and sex drive. But it does more than just that. This hormone regulates red blood cell production, bone density, fat distribution, muscle mass, and more. It literally affects every cell in a man’s body.
3. Male Menopause Is Real.
It goes by different names, but male menopause, andropause, or the midlife crisis, is a real phenomenon with a hormonal cause behind it. The level of testosterone in a man’s body drops by about 1% every year after the age of 30. This causes a wide range of subtle physical and mental changes. Most men interpret these changes as becoming weaker and less virile.
4. A Hormonal Imbalance In Men Affects More Than Just Sex Drive.
When people talk about male hormones, they tend to relate them solely to sex drive. Too much testosterone makes a man insatiable; too little leaves him uninterested. The truth is that a hormonal imbalance can create many symptoms such as heart palpitations, hair loss, depression, anxiety, weight gain, memory loss, and more. It can even increase the risk for serious health problems like heart attack and stroke.
5. Testosterone Doesn’t Cause Aggression.
Testosterone is often blamed for male aggression and anger. However, a recent university study proved test subjects with greater levels of testosterone did not exhibit more aggression.
6. Thyroid Hormone Levels Drop With Age.
In addition to a drop in testosterone levels, men also experience a decline in thyroid hormone production, especially after age 60. This can bring on symptoms like erectile dysfunction, memory loss, weight gain, constipation and more.
7. Men Have Monthly Cycles, Too.
Men’s hormone levels rise and fall in regular cycles, just like women. The male cycle is not as trackable as the female cycle, but keeping a journal of emotional states for two or three months will often reveal solid patterns in a man’s behavior.
Now that you’ve got a better understanding of male hormones, you should have a better understanding of the men in your life. If you’ve got any other questions about male hormones, feel free to contact our wellness consultants at 281-698-8698 with any other questions you may have.
