Common Cause of Developing Allergies After Pregnancy

March 5, 2019

Did You Develop Allergies After Pregnancy?Do you find yourself suddenly sneezing and congested?  Are these allergy symptoms new for you? Maybe you used to embrace the changing seasons and didn’t think twice about seasonal allergies. That was before the birth of your child.

Now it’s happened to you. You are now one of the 60 million Americans suffering from allergy symptoms. Even the thought of flowers in bloom could bring on a sinus infection. Before you buy stock in Kleenex and wipe out your local drug store’s supply of Zyrtec, consider your hormones.

What do hormones have to do with allergies?

Hormones? What do allergies have to with hormones? If you’ve noticed an onset of allergy symptoms post pregnancy, there’s a good chance that your hormones have everything to do with your allergies. In fact, a sudden onset of allergies can also come during other periods of hormonal fluctuation, such as perimenopause, tubal ligation, hysterectomy or menopause.

Often women without a history of allergies unexpectedly develop them after childbirth or, if they are allergy prone, their symptoms are worsened. Estrogen dominance appears again as a common culprit. One cause for this may be that estrogen promotes the release of histamine, the chemical responsible for symptoms such as nasal congestion, watery eyes, coughing and wheezing. We have learned that the change in one hormone often leads to a change in another. A decline in progesterone results in a decline in the production of cortisol, which is the body’s natural anti-inflammatory hormone.

Conventional medicine’s concept of allergy treatment consists of symptom masking drugs such as antihistamines. Antihistamines merely place a band-aid over the allergy symptoms, all the while causing a host of side effects such as fatigue, drowsiness, dry mouth, loss of appetite, nausea, headaches, etc. Rather than masking the symptoms and risking side effects, why don’t we treat the underlying cause?

Treat the Underlying Hormone Deficiency

Treating the underlying cause of a problem is such a great idea that in fact, that’s just what we do! If your allergy symptoms are caused by hormonal imbalance, you may benefit from balancing your hormones with bioidentical progesterone, thyroid, cortisol and DHEA. Because bioidentical hormones are a molecular match to the hormones produced by your body, hormonal balance is achieved naturally without the side effects that normally occur with pharmaceutical drugs that are foreign to your body. It’s simply a matter of putting back in what was missing.

Dr. Hotze discusses the onset of allergies after childbirth:

If you have been battling an onset of allergies and recurrent infections following a season in your life such as childbirth, menopause or hysterectomy, you may need to look no further than your hormones. Don’t just treat the symptoms, because that won’t stop them from reoccurring.  Treat the underlying cause by balancing your hormones.
