Mother’s Day is one of our favorite times of year, because it gives us a chance to celebrate you, moms. For new moms, this time can feel that much more special. You finally have your very own baby to hold, love and take care of. Life is great, right?
What Changed?
Or maybe things aren’t so great. Perhaps something’s changed and you don’t feel as well as you used to. You are tired all the time and it is difficult to take care of your baby. You have insomnia, headaches, brain fog, anxiety, weight gain and you are becoming irritable from the fatigue you feel on a daily basis. You’re thinking, “it wasn’t supposed to be this way.”
Hormonal Imbalance After Childbirth
While you might feel all alone, it is quite common for childbirth to alter hormonal balance and throw you off track, causing all kinds of negative health symptoms. These can be caused by estrogen dominance, hypothyroidism, and adrenal fatigue. It doesn’t always happen after your first baby. It could happen after your second or third, or any time after childbirth.
Common Hormonal Imbalance Symptoms to Look For:
Fatigue
Weight gain
Low libido
Difficulty concentrating
Short term memory loss
Mood swings
Migraines
Insomnia
Anxiety
Hair loss
Dry skin
Constipation
Irregular menstrual cycles
Postpartum depression
Traditional Medicine Often Fails You
Have you gone to your doctor, only to be told that she can’t find anything wrong with you? Are you feeling like it’s all in your head? Have you been told that your blood test results are normal? Symptoms of thyroid problems and hormonal imbalance are commonly misdiagnosed by traditional doctors. Have you been given an antidepressant, because “that’s the only way you’ll come out of this”? Or you might be given a diagnosis that merely describes your symptoms such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, IBS, insomnia, depression or anxiety disorder.

Meet our doctors"After a traumatic accident, I was told that I was in early menopause in my 20s and could never have children, however after restoring my hormones, I am now expecting baby #7!”
This is the second pregnancy/post partum time where I have lost significant weight during my first trimester (wasn’t due to morning sickness, diet remained the same), and then had my baby only to start packing on the pounds. I am hypothyroid but my levels are currently within range (and fairly low), so this is a very frustrating mystery to me. Could it be cortisol? The absence of HCG? I have to get this figured out. My weight is resistant to diet and exercise, I eat clean and am very active. Please help me.
Dear Lindsay,
We are so sorry to hear about your struggle with weight – please know that you are not alone. This is a common symptom of hypothyroidism. Just because your blood work levels are in the normal range doesn’t mean your dosage or even formulation (i.e. T4 vs a T3/T4 combo) are correct for you. Since you are having weight gain, this is a clear sign that you are not on the correct dose of thyroid medication, or possibly not the right type of thyroid medication. Our doctors focus primarily on how the patient feels and not solely on a blood test. We use natural desiccated thyroid to treat hypothyroidism with great results. We will be happy to help you. Please call a wellness consultant at 877-698-8698 if you would like more information about how our program can help you. We hope you have a Merry Christmas!
My name is Jenna, I am 25 and have a 3 year old baby girl. Since giving birth my hair has been falling out non stop! I mean bunches every time I comb it, I had really thick hair before. Besides this the only other thing I can think of is that the 2 month shot and minerva pill gave me a con start period. But I have not been on any contraception for months now and it makes no difference. 3 years of terrible hair loss. It’s actually scary.
Hi, my name is Tammy and I would like to know if anyone has ever had an issue with medication not working after having a baby? Last year was my first time getting pregnant and I delivered twins via cesarean this past June. I was diagnosed with anxiety and adhd years before pregnancy, and fortunately I was able to stop my prescribed medication (Adderall, without having any focus issues) as soon as I found out that I was pregnant. About a month after the babies were born, I felt like it was time to start taking my Adderall again as I was having a lot of trouble focusing and concentrating. I restarted the Adderall (same mg as the past) and it did not help me like it used to. Some days I felt like it didn’t help me at all. I had my doctor recently increase the mg and I still feel the same…very foggy, terrible concentration/focus, & memory problems as well. I am wondering if my hormones are imbalanced as I feel that my tolerance should have not been affected after not taking the Adderall throughout my pregnancy. I recently scheduled a doctor’s apt with a doctor that practices functional medicine. I am going to have my hormone levels checked through a saliva sample, but I can’t take the test until the end of the month, and the results take at least 2 weeks to come back. I feel like I will be “stuck” like this forever, and it’s a horrible feeling when you have 2 precious babies to care for, but you’re worried every single day about having an accident due to lack of focus, inattention, severe brain fog, memory issues. I have already had 2 accidents with my daughter in the past 5 months. I don’t want anymore, and I just want to feel like my normal self again. I have had some blood work done, but everything tested appeared to be within normal limits which makes me feel like I’m crazy.
Dear Tammy,
Congratulations on your twins! This is a very exciting time in your life and you should be able to feel your best. When it comes to hormone imbalance, your symptoms are very important and key in telling your doctor which hormones may need to be replenished. We recommend bioidentical hormones because they are identical to the hormones made by your body.
Symptoms such as brain fog, difficulty concentrating, and memory loss are common symptoms of low thyroid function, or hypothyroidism. You can’t rely on a single blood test, the TSH, when being diagnosed for hypothyroidism. Just because your blood work may be in the “normal range” doesn’t mean you are at the right level for you. Please know that you are not crazy! What you are feeling is very real and many women experience this. It can be resolved by restoring your hormones to their optimal levels. Again, your doctor should listen to your symptoms and take those into consideration.

I’m pretty positive I have a hormonal imbalance. I have felt all the symptoms listed for about 2 years and been to doctors only to hear blood work is fine etc etc. frustrating and gave up trying to figure it out because I assumed this was just going to have to be the new norm. So, now that I have been doing some more research, I am looking at the bioidentical hormones. Is this is pill form? Do I need a prescription or where would I buy these?
Dear Chelsea,
We understand your frustration. Many women run into this same roadblock, when doctors only look at their lab results. Our doctors listen and evaluate you according to your symptoms and clinical history.
At Hotze Pharmacy, we make our bioidentical hormones in capsule, cream, and sublingual tablet form. You do need a prescription from a doctor. Please call our wellness consultants for more information at 281-698-8698. We will be happy to help you.
Hi there my name is susan, and am have a problem
I just had my baby about 7 months ago. And one of eyes is turning red all the time .a doctor told me it could be my hermone is this possible and what can I do to get it back in check.by the way the redness comes and goes like every month or so please help.
I am 3 months postpartum. I had a c section and have been on birth control for 2 months now. I stopped bleeding for 2 weeks and then had a period but i’ve been spotting ever since (2 weeks now). Could it
be the hormones in the birth control effecting this?
Hi, do you have recent update . I am same boat.
I have a beautiful baby boy that is 8 months old. When we took my son home the first few days I cried a lot. I couldn’t control my emotions and I didn’t/don’t know why I was so sad. I feel like I am hiding something from my husband and family because I don’t really know what it is I am feeling right now. I do have hypothyroid and am on medication that I take daily. The dose changed after I had my son. I don’t know if I am depressed or what is wrong with me. I am so tired all of the time, I do get moody but am able to control it most of the time, I cried when I read the intro to this page…I think I need help. I live in Southern California, do you have an office here?
Dear Daniela,
First, congratulations on your baby boy! We are so sorry that you are not feeling well, but please know that you are not alone. These changes are common after childbirth due to hormone decline and imbalance, and there is a natural solution.
During pregnancy, the placenta produces progesterone – known for its mood elevating effects – at levels that are many times higher than your body normally produces. Upon the birth of the baby, the placenta is expelled resulting in an immediate drop in a woman’s progesterone level, leading to feelings of depression. Since the drastic drop in progesterone causes the low moods of postpartum depression, it only makes sense to restore the body’s progesterone levels with bioidentical progesterone.
It is also possible that you are not on the right dose of thyroid medication since you are still having symptoms of hypothyroidism. When our patients still have low thyroid symptoms, our doctors will slowly increase the dose until those symptoms go away. Also, if you are on a synthetic thyroid such as Synthroid, then that could be part of the problem, too. We find that our patients have much better results on natural desiccated thyroid.
We do not have an office in California, however we do see people from all over the world. You only need to come to Houston for your very first visit, which is a thorough examination with our doctor. After that, your follow up visits may be done over the phone. Please consider calling our wellness consultants at 877-698-8698 who can tell you about our treatment program. We would count it a privilege to help you feel your best again.
Hi,
I have delivered a baby girl 50days before. I am getting my mensus alternative weeks and having it for 5 days. And it’s heavy flow and clots. I was depressed when my daughter born because she was in ICU for couple of days due to meconium issue. Then I don’t have complete milk secretion so I use to give milk powder. Could you please response me to regularize my menopause. Before pregnancy I usually get 28days cycle. Please help me.
My name is Chrissy. I had my baby girl 4/10/15 (first pregnancy). She was born the months early weighing 1.15 ounces. We stayed in the NICU 90 days. She is perfectly healthy and right where she needs to be developmentally. She is a true miracle! However, just recently I feel so all over the place. My hormones seem to be going crazy. I haven’t made an appointment with my doctor yet. Any advice? I do not feel like I am suffering from depression. I do have major anxiety. I have always had anxiety though.
Dear Chrissy,
Congratulations on your baby girl! We are so glad to hear that she is perfectly healthy. That is such a blessing.
Anxiety is a common symptom of hormone decline. Please start by taking our women’s symptom checker hormone quiz here, to identify if you have other symptoms of hormone decline: http://makeshift-worm.flywheelsites.com/symptom-checker/hormone-thyroid-adrenals-for-women/
Our doctors treat many women who experience numerous symptoms after childbirth, and who just don’t feel right or feel like themselves anymore. By replacing the hormones your body needs, you can feel good again.

I have a 6 months old baby boy and i suspect he has a hormonal imbalance, cz i noticed that he is growing some hair on his pubic and this is really worrying me!!
Dear Kelly,
Congratulations on your baby boy! It is likely that since he is 6 months old, and that if he is getting dairy directly, this could be a possible cause, so we would recommend stopping the dairy and taking him to the doctor to be evaluated. We hope this information is helpful – thank you for your comment.

Hi. My name is Kamoya Smith. I am from Jamaica. I have been suffering from ppl for over the past six months. I have been on these antidepressants and antipsychotic meds and none of them worked. They only made me worse; valium 5mg, risperdone 5mg, epilim 200mg, quetiapine 100 and 200 mg, stimuloton 50mg. They have not told me that I should check my hormones to c if they are imbalanced or not. I feel insane…and I have been experiencing symptoms of hormonal imbalance.
Dear Kamoya,
Hello – thank you for reaching out. We are so sorry to hear that you have been suffering. You are correct that antidepressants and antipsychotic medications will not solve the underlying cause of your symptoms. Please know that you are not insane – many women experience unpleasant symptoms of hormone imbalance. Many doctors do not recognize that a hormone deficiency could be the cause and only prescribe medications to try to mask the symptoms.

Hi! I am 5 months postpartum and suffering from anxiety and a little bit of depression. I get stressed feeling easily and foggy headed. Just don’t feel myself. I used bioidentical progesterone cream prior to pregnancy with great results. I had my hormone levels checked 6 weeks postpartum and my progesterone and estrogen levels were very low. My cortisol levels were high and my thyroid looked normal. My hormones were tested via a 24 hour urine test and everything else was done by a blood panel. I was prescribed a low dose of oral bioidentical progesterone 40mg, but I didn’t feel any better after taking it for about a month so I stopped and have just been doing over the counter progesterone cream. I’m on a mineral supplement called min-Chex along with a prenatal. I take fermented cod liver oil too. I am exclusively breastfeeding so I don’t know how that playS into the mix of what I can take. Do you think I would benefit from retesting?? Do you have any suggestions…. ready to feel better 🙂 thank you so much!
Dear Emily,
Thank you for your question. We are so sorry that you are experiencing those symptoms. Anxiety, depression, stress, and brain fog are common symptoms of hormone imbalance. It is common for women to feel different after childbirth, however by replenishing your hormones with bioidentical hormones, you can get back to feeling like yourself again.
Remember, you do not want to rely on blood levels or lab work alone. Symptoms are very important in diagnosing a hormone deficiency. If you did not feel better on your bioidentical progesterone dose, then you were not on the right dose for you. Your doctor should adjust the dose until your symptoms are resolved.

Hi my name is jillian I just had my second child through IVF almost 1 year ago ever since then I have lost a lot of weight which is normal for me because I have always been thin however I now have acne super oily/dry skin if that even makes sense and now I’m experiencing brown breakthrough bleeding in between periods?! Is it a hormone issue what could be wrong? Major memory loss also I forget everything it’s actually scaring me my husband thinks something’s wrong with me please help
Dear Jillian,
Thank you for your question, and congratulations on having your second child! Yes, it is possible that your symptoms are caused by a hormone deficiency and imbalance. This is very common after childbirth.
Memory loss is definitely a common symptom of hypothyroidism. Take a look at Terri’s story – she was diagnosed with the onset of Alzheimer’s, when it was really hypothyroidism and hormone imbalance: http://makeshift-worm.flywheelsites.com/2011/06/terri-s-story-memory-loss/
Please don’t lose hope. If we can be of service to you, please contact one of our wellness consultants at 281-698-8698. We will be happy to help you solve the underlying cause of your symptoms and get on the right path to wellness, naturally.

Hi my name is Jennifer. After I had my son I had severe stomach issues where I couldn’t eat without it going straight through me or coming right back up. It took a long time but I finally got that under control enough to where I can work but lately I think I’m going to lose my job. I feel crazy and emotional and I can tell it’s my hormones but my gyno says this is just how it is when you get older. She gave me Wellbutrin which I do not want to take. I’m at the end of my rope and I feel crazy and borderline psycho at times. I don’t know what to do or who to see to make it better. Just seems like they don’t understand.
Dear Jennifer,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We do understand how you feel. Please know that you are not crazy – many women feel this way when their hormones start to decline and fall out of balance. With hormone deficiencies it is common to feel emotional, tired, and not like yourself. No, this is not how you are supposed to feel at any age.
Mainstream doctors often prescribe antidepressants but that is not the answer and it won’t solve the underlying cause of your symptoms. Trust your instincts about your hormones.
Please take our symptom checker quiz which will give you a good idea of what’s going on: http://makeshift-worm.flywheelsites.com/symptom-checker/

Hi
My name is Jackie.
I’m Mongolian. I need help please. I’m 6 months PP. I have been having lightheadness for 6 months. Why is that? So ennoying. I want to be myself again? I did CT, MRI, EKG and blood work and all came back normal. Please tell me what’s really wrong with me? How long is it going to take?
Thank you!
Dear Jackie,
Postpartum hormonal changes can and do occur, and they may result in many different symptoms, which can take anywhere from weeks to months to resolve. You would need to see a physician in order to be evaluated for your symptoms. We recommend that you see your OB first, then PCP second for the initial evaluation.

Hi there-
I have been suffering with Post partum depression, anxiety, and insomnia for four months. My doctors say it’s not my hormones and my Tsh level was within range. Is it hormones?? I want my life back. Thank you!
Dear Katie,
We are so sorry to hear that you are suffering. Yes, hormones have everything to do with postpartum depression. The drastic drop in progesterone after childbirth is a common cause of it – here is a helpful article: http://makeshift-worm.flywheelsites.com/2017/09/ivanka-trump-had-postpartum-depression-dr-hotze-reveals-its-true-cause/
Also, the TSH is not the best way to diagnose low thyroid function. It is important that your doctor listen to your symptoms and not just rely on a single blood test. This TSH blood test lab range is so wide that it encompasses the majority of people, and you can be in the “normal range” but still be hypothyroid. This test fails the majority of patients. Here is a helpful article: http://makeshift-worm.flywheelsites.com/2018/01/why-your-doc-misses-the-hypothyroidism-diagnosis/

Hi. I’ve had hypertension 1 week after giving birth and still having it for 7 months now. I’ve been depressed and emotional most of the time and I want to know I will get back to being healthy again and having normal blood pressure without taking meds. I’ve been stressing myself thinking about how to be better and I think it has been contributing with my bp but I cant stop thinking and I can reassure myself that I will be the old me.
Dear Charla,
Thank you for your comments. We’re so sorry that you are not feeling well. Depression and not feeling like yourself are common symptoms that many women experience after childbirth. It has to do with hormone imbalance. After giving birth, your progesterone levels drop dramatically and this can lead to those symptoms. Here is an article with a video by Dr. Hotze that may be helpful:

I’m postpartum day 10 I haven’t felt myself. I get anxious at night which started late pregnancy. I have gotten some sleep but I struggle to get to sleep, it’s kik I’m fighting to stay awake until I fall asleep. A strange feeling occurred during pregnancy that suddenly I’m scared to sleep because I’m afraid I won’t wake up . Or I’ll miss out on something if I nap during the day. When I get up in the morning I feel foggy. I have cried a few times. Sensitive.

I’m 26 years old and have 2 kids ages 9 and 6. I was 16 when I had my first daughter and after giving birth I felt normal, physically and mentally. Surprisingly I didn’t have a lot of major issues. However, after my second child, I immediately felt completely different. It first started with extreme weight gain, then extreme mood swings, and then followed extreme fatigue. It’s been 6 years since I’ve had my second daughter and I’ve been to my doctor so many times only to be told they don’t see anything wrong. My blood tests come back normal every single time and the only diagnosis I’ve received is anxiety and PCOS. My periods are so irregular I sometimes go more than 6 months without a menstrual cycle. I’ve become very depressed due to always feeling exhausted and it’s started to feel like it’s all in my head. My mood swings make day to day activities hard as well. I don’t know what else to do. I’m 100 pounds overweight and it becomes so hard to control my hunger and fatigue. It feels like I’m imprisoned in my own body. I feel like my only hope might be to meet with an endocrinologist or maybe even a holistic doctor. I’m positive there’s something wrong with my hormonal balance ever since I gave birth 6 years ago, but because my doctors have always ignored me or told me nothing is wrong, it has been left untreated.
Dear Ella,
We’re so sorry to hear all that you’ve been through. Please don’t lose hope – your symptoms are experienced by many, many women after childbirth, and often conventional doctors fail to properly diagnose the hormone deficiencies and imbalance. We see this all the time – even with endocrinologists who take the conventional approach. As far as your blood work – it is common for thyroid tests to come back in the in the normal range.” That doesn’t mean you don’t have low thyroid function. Our doctors focus on your symptoms – they tell you what is going on. Please take our symptom checker: http://makeshift-worm.flywheelsites.com/symptom-checker/
Here is a good article explaining why hypothyroidism is commonly misdiagnosed: http://makeshift-worm.flywheelsites.com/2018/01/why-your-doc-misses-the-hypothyroidism-diagnosis/
Here is one on anxiety: http://makeshift-worm.flywheelsites.com/2018/04/anxiety-relief-with-bioidentical-progesterone/
Hypothyroidism also contributes to anxiety.
Take a look at one of our patient’s testimonial videos – Tanya made this herself about how her health declined after having her daughter – it is very powerful and will give you hope. (It’s a tear jerker, too, but it has a GREAT ending.): http://makeshift-worm.flywheelsites.com/2013/02/tanya-s-story/

I’m now 7 months postpartum. I was always very thin before getting pregnant. I gained 60 pounds with my pregnancy and 30 of it came off relatively easily. I am now working out 4 times a week and eating very healthy. I cannot lose a pound. I also have hair loss and anxiety. Could this all be related to hormones?
Dear Haley,
Thank you for your question. Yes, this can definitely be caused by a shift/imbalance in your hormones which commonly occurs after childbirth. The symptoms you described are very common with low thyroid function, or hypothyroidism, which can be affected after giving birth. Here is an article that may be helpful:

I had the same situation as the above comment. However it has been extremely. Prior to pregnancy I was nearly skin and bones, and could eat anything. Post pregnancy (1st one), I have continuously been gaining weight – despite serious periodic diets and weight loss. I am now 76 years old and weigh 195. (I weighed 130 at 5’7″ pre pregnancy. HELP!

Ever since birth I swear an enormous amount basically only on my face whether I’m sitting in a room that is 60 degrees or 80 sitting or active stressed mot stressed it is a lot of sweat so much my face gets covered and sweat constantly is dripping off of my face I cannot wear make u pop anymore because I have to bring a towel everywhere with me and wipe face multiple times per minute when it’s really bad 2 months ago I went a week to where my seeating seemed normal and was not abnormal and after the week was over it was right back to out of hand and it is not around my period or anything but I told my gyn he checked my thyroid and said it’s normal and I also missed my period these past 2 months and I was given a sonogram and I have a fibroid tumor on my uterus wall and have to go back in 2 months to see if it’s going away but my gyn hasnt really made it important to keep looking for reasoning to my abnormal sweating or something that can stop it. What should I do? Can a fibroid cause this what should I do idk what could cause me sweating this bad and only on my face

Hi my name is Jamie. I had my first daughter 12-8-15. I’m 35 now, and the first weeks of pregnancy I began severe complex migraines. I was put in the hositpal and had several tests done. I’ve had 3 brain mri, a spine and neck mri, so many tests and I’m still suffering. It’s really bad around the time of the month. The night before I’ll feel off, I’ll get light headed, brain fog, just feel off.
Then my symptoms kick in.
I’ll feel very weird
Brain fog
Weird silent migraines
Muscle pain
Dry skin
Lost a lost of hair
Increased stress by a million
Hot flashes
Upset stomach
The list goes on.
I’ve had to leave my job because it’s so bad I can’t do much. I really need help. Irs definitely a hormonal imbalance. I’ve told them this from day one. Only thing that makes sense.
Day 3 is really bad and day 5 of mentrual then throughout the month I have ups and downs.
Please help.
I’ve lost my life- I owned a business for 9 years and had to close
My child sees me in bed or never feeling well
I don’t leave the house because when these symptoms come on they are intense.
Thanks!
Jamie
Dear Jamie,
We are so sorry to hear what you have been going through, but rest assured, this commonly happens to women after they’ve had a child and you CAN get your life back and resolve these symptoms. You have so many symptoms of hormonal imbalance and decline. Plus, the fact that you notice symptoms relating to your period is definitely pointing to the fact that there is an imbalance. This is Tanya’s story – it’s very inspiring – she is a patient of ours who shared her story about how she didn’t feel like herself after having her daughter – today she is doing great:

My second daughter is 5.5 months old and I feel like I can’t lose a pound. I exercise and eat decently, but nothing is budging weigh wise. I am on Minastrin, which I took before both pregnancies and never had a problem. My periods have been irregular and I do suffer from insomnia a few times a week. I have PCOS, so that doesn’t help. I just feel different this time. I had all my bloodwork done in December and everything came back “normal”.
