Answers To Your Questions About Tubal Ligation

July 30, 2024

Every year, approximately 700,000 women in the United States opt to trust their doctor’s recommendation for birth control, undergoing a “simple” and “benign” procedure called a tubal ligation or having their “tubes tied.”  Their doctors often dismiss any significant aftermath, asserting they “will feel just fine”– only to find out they did not!

If you have had your tubes tied, you probably trusted your doctor that you wouldn’t feel much different afterwards. However, unfortunately, many women in fact feel vastly different – often much worse. The reason we want to address this procedure is because it affects your hormone production and balance and can have devastating effects on your health.

If you have had your tubes tied,

  • Are you just plain miserable and feel like a different person?
  • Have you lost your libido / sex drive?
  • Are you gaining weight that you cannot get rid of no matter what you do?
  • Do you have heavy periods, headaches, and cannot sleep?

I am here to give you real hope and tell you that you can get back to feeling like your old self again, perhaps even better!

What is a Tubal Ligation?

Every month, an egg released from an ovary will travel through the fallopian tube down to the uterus.  When you undergo a tubal ligation, the surgeon will cut or block the fallopian tubes to prevent the egg from reaching the uterus, preventing a pregnancy. The surgeon performs this ring or procedure on the fallopian tubes by either burning the tubes shut (cauterized), clamping them with a small clip or ring, or coiling them (tubal occlusion procedure).

What Does Tubal Ligation Do to Your Hormones?

The blood supply to your ovaries is affected after this procedure, altering the ovaries’ ability to function optimally. With a compromised ovarian blood supply, your ovary’s ability to produce estrogen and progesterone will rapidly and dramatically decline. You and other women will likely experience symptoms of hormone deficiency, imbalance, and premature menopause.

Symptoms of Hormone Deficiency and Imbalance After a Tubal Ligation

  • Fatigue
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Poor sleep
  • Irregular periods
  • Mood swings
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Loss of libido
  • Anxiety
  • Brain fog
  • Weight gain

Additional Physical Triggers for Hormone Imbalance

A tubal ligation is one of many causations for hormonal imbalance in women. Women also experience hormonal decline and imbalance with the following:

  • Puberty
  • While taking birth control pills or counterfeit (synthetic) estrogen hormones
  • After childbirth
  • After a hysterectomy
  • Menopause

Conventional Approach After Tubal Ligation

Conventional doctors will often dismiss your new hormonal symptoms as having little or nothing to do with your tubal ligation! You may hear them say “Tubal sterilization cannot/will not affect your hormone levels.”  A comment like this might leave you to question whether “This is all in your head” or “Am I being a hypochondriac?”  To add comedy to error, these conventional doctors will treat these new hormonal symptoms with chemical drugs like antidepressants or pharmaceuticals for anxiety or insomnia, completely bypassing or recognizing treatment for the root cause!

How to Restore Hormone Balance After a Tubal Ligation

Common sense would lend itself to the solution that you need to replace the newly deficient hormones with hormones that are bio-identical in their structure! Bioidentical hormones are “biologically” identical to the same hormones your body produces already, so your body will not know the difference between the supplemental bio-identical hormones (progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone) and what it already was designed to produce!

Supporting your body with the hormones it needs will help you begin to feel like “YOU” again!

Frequently Asked Questions

“Does having your tubes tied affect your hormones?”

Yes! It will impact your hormone production and subsequently, the overall hormonal balance, leading to various symptoms.

“I am so moody, irritable, and even depressed after my tubal ligation! Why? I was told a tubal ligation would be a simple procedure with minimal downside!”

A tubal ligation severs the fallopian tubes, cutting off or decreasing the blood supply to your ovaries, directly impacting the production of the very hormones that help with moods, irritability, and depression! Additionally, you are no longer releasing a live egg, which was triggering the production of the “happy hormone,” progesterone! When you undergo tubal ligation, it suppresses the release of a live egg and thus suppresses your ability to produce progesterone. This leads to moodiness, loss of energy, weight gain and all that leads to depression. Which is why many conventional doctors will then put you on an antidepressant, which is NOT the solution.  The solution is replenishing your lost progesterone and balancing your hormones.  You do not have to feel this way and to not have to go on pharmaceutical drugs.

“How will my menstrual cycle be affected by this surgery?”

You may experience irregular periods and other menstrual changes due to hormonal fluctuations.

If a Tubal Ligation cuts off my blood supply, why am I still cycling or bleeding?

If you are bleeding your body is making estrogen and now you are becoming “estrogen dominant” and thus symptoms.  Your body is now not doing what it naturally should be doing with a balance of both estrogen and progesterone. Again, a tubal ligation procedure stops the ability of producing that live egg, which in turn produces progesterone.  Your progesterone must be replenished.

“I have no or a low desire for intimacy with my spouse after my procedure. Is there a connection? If so, what can I do?”

Libido is derived from your sex hormones – a combination of progesterone, testosterone, and estrogen.  When that balance is disrupted, which occurs post tubal ligation, it also disrupts nature’s balance in your body.  This is why a woman tends to lose their drive and urge for intimate, sexual relations with their spouse. This is not normal.   While you make testosterone throughout the month, the tubal ligation is “disrupting” nature’s balance.

“Are there any lifestyle changes I need to make before or after the procedure?”

Maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and managing stress can help mitigate some symptoms.  Replenishing your hormones, along with good nutrition and exercise, to where your unique body requires is the best assistance you can provide to your body to help eliminate symptoms.

“I thought this was a simple surgery with minimal side effects. Instead, my entire world has been turned upside down. Why did this happen?”

Hormonal imbalances and other side effects can occur due to the impact on your ovarian blood supply and function. Traditional providers should provide more education on the potential side effects of Tubal Ligation.

“My doctor put me on Premarin after I had my tubes tied, but now I feel even worse. Why would I need estrogen if I still have my ovaries?”

Each one of your cells in your body still have the same needs, including the need for hormones, to work effectively.  Even though your tubes are tied, your cells still need to be “fed” with the hormones it needs.  Premarin is a form of estrogen replacement, but it is not a bioidentical hormone, so works like an ill-fitting key into the keyhole of your cell.  You are likely feeling worse because your cells are not able to function optimally.

“I have no desire for intimacy after my procedure. Is there a connection? If so, what can I do?”

Hormonal imbalances likely are affecting your libido. Restoring hormone balance by supporting your body with bioidentical hormones can help.

“Can this procedure be reversed if I change my mind about having children?”

Tubal ligation is generally considered a permanent form of birth control, but reversal is sometimes possible through surgery.

“I feel like I am in menopause and I’m only in my 30s – what went wrong?”

You may be experiencing premature menopausal symptoms due to hormonal imbalance.  If you had a tubal ligation, your symptoms are likely caused by the cessation of the necessary blood supply to your fallopian tubes, directly impacting your hormone levels.
