2:22: I decided, well, I went for a checkup and the doctors, said, “You’re fine. Everything’s normal. Stay on your blood pressure medicine and stay on a pill every day and keep taking your vitamin D.” And I came home and it’s like, “I still don’t feel right. How could they say that?”

4:03: Well, I have been so blessed through the years with good health and turning 65, it’s like, “This isn’t what 65 is like. It can’t be.”

4:21: I was experiencing indigestion. I was waking up with headaches during the night. I had restless legs. My energy level was not where it needed to be. My motivation was gone and I’m a very motivated person, I enjoy mornings. I would wake up and I was tired.

7:13: I walked in and of course was greeted by Becky who is just the greeting person deluxe.

7:52: I know my blood has been taken through the years and I know people have been gentle, but nothing like Lydia.

7:59: She is written at the top of my chart. No one will take my blood like Lydia. She is unbelievable. Just little details like that.

8:14: I met Ivy in the pharmacy and she introduced herself, “I am now your personal pharmacist.” And I thought, “I’ve never had a personal pharmacist.” The vitamin girls, that vitamin shop is great. I just love those girls.

And it was, you all were waiting on me. And so I have felt very loved since I’ve started coming here.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Hello. I’m Dr. Steve Hotze, and welcome to the program today. I do believe that you and every individual deserves to have a physician and a staff of professionals who can coach you on a path to health and wellness naturally, so as you mature, you have energy, vitality and you’re enthusiastic about life without being loaded down with a bunch of pharmaceutical drugs. We have a great story today. I have with me as our guest here at Hotze Health & Wellness Center, Peggy Wright. Peggy, welcome to the show.

Peggy: Thank you, Dr. Hotze.

Dr. Steven Hotze: So Peggy, you’ve been a guest here at the Hotze Health & Wellness Center since I guess back in December.

Peggy: Six months.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Yes.

Peggy: Six months.

Dr. Steven Hotze: A little over six months. So, we’re glad to have you here and apparently you’ve had some really great success.

Peggy: Yes, I have.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Good. Well, tell us about yourself. Where are you from originally?

Peggy: I grew up in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Steven Hotze: That’s good.

Peggy: I’m a Texas girl, married a Texas man.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Good.

Peggy: Met him at TCU.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Did you?

Peggy: Yes.

Dr. Steven Hotze: You’ve been married, how many years?

Peggy: 44 years.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Wow. Have you got him broken in yet?

Peggy: Oh, a little bit. Yeah.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Some men it takes harder to break than others.

Peggy: It does.

Dr. Steven Hotze: But you look like you all are happy.

Peggy: Yes. He’s a good man.

Dr. Steven Hotze: That’s great.

Peggy: Yes.

Dr. Steven Hotze: You’ve got your own independent business…

Peggy: We do. Yes.

Dr. Steven Hotze: …independent business people in the food industry and…

Peggy: We are in business together.

Dr. Steven Hotze: And that’s great. How long have you had your own business?

Peggy: We’ve been in business about 17 years now.

Dr. Steven Hotze: That’s great. And I know you’ve been very successful in it, so I congratulate you on your success.

Peggy: Thank you.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Well, tell me Peggy, what in the world made you decide to come into the Hotze Health & Wellness Center?

Peggy’s Story

Peggy: Well, I think back and I guess the lockdown with the COVID issue and I think it took the wind out of my sails. And so during that time, I just wanted to…I came out of that and weight gain and just losing, I guess, losing my mojo with life. I decided, well, I went for a checkup and the doctors, said, “You’re fine. Everything’s normal. Stay on your blood pressure medicine and stay on a pill every day and keep taking your vitamin D.” And I came home and it’s like, “I still don’t feel right. How could they say that?”

Dr. Steven Hotze: They said your blood was okay?

Peggy: Everything was fine.

Dr. Steven Hotze: But you weren’t?

Peggy: I was not. And I wanted to feel good again.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Good again.

Peggy: We have two grown children, both are married. Our daughter, and son-in-law live in Rhode Island with three little grandsons who are nine, seven and six.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Wow.

Peggy: And I wanted to keep up with those little ones, when they would come back and visit. And anyway, we’ve lived here in Katy, Texas since 1980. I’ve been your neighbor all these years. We live about five minutes from the clinic.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Oh, that’s great.

Peggy: Through the years, I’ve heard about you and good things, better things and I’ve always been curious about your clinic. So, I came back from the doctor and it’s like, “You know what? I’m just going to give it a shot.” And so, I made a phone call and that changed my life six months ago.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Wow. That’s great. Well, so tell me what kind of symptoms were you experiencing when you say you didn’t feel normal? What symptoms were you experiencing?

Peggy’s Symptoms

Peggy: Well, I have been so blessed through the years with good health and turning 65, it’s like, “This isn’t what 65 is like. It can’t be.” I was, let’s see, I was experiencing indigestion. I was waking up with headaches during the night. I had restless legs. My energy level was not where it needed to be. My motivation was gone and I’m a very motivated person, I enjoy mornings. I would wake up and I was tired. I could not wait for a nap. And it just was not me, I wasn’t getting things done. And so, those were my big symptoms.

Dr. Steven Hotze: How about any difficulty with weight, losing weight?

Peggy: Oh, yes. Yes, of course that as well. It was to the point, we lived in a two story house, I never go upstairs, I never did. And, I know when I came into the clinic and I saw your stairs, I was like, “Oh gosh, I’m going to have to go up these stairs.” My joints were achy, my knees, everything. And it’s like, “What is going on with me?”

Dr. Steven Hotze: Now, did you notice any brain fog at all?

Peggy Wright: Oh, yes. Yes. Just being tired. I just…

Dr. Steven Hotze: And you’re running a business, so it was difficult just to carry out your activities of business…

Peggy: I know it. I could not double task anymore, multitask, triple task.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Okay. So you came to the center, had you known anybody else? Had you been here before?

Peggy: Through the years, yes, I had. And then of course, Elaina and I have a mutual friend, and so I had seen her and of course she is so encouraging. And so I just thought I’d give it a shot. And before I did it, before I made that phone call, well, no, it was after I made the phone call, I thought, “Okay, if, if this works out, I’m going to give it one year. I’m going to commit to one year. I don’t care what it takes, what the cost, I’m worth it, because I’ve got to feel better.”

Dr. Steven Hotze: If you don’t have your health, you can have all the money in the world. And there are plenty of people that have a lot of money, but they have poor health and they willingly exchange that for good health.

Peggy: So true.

Dr. Steven Hotze: My philosophy is if you’re alive, you might as well feel alive. So, what good does it do to…

Peggy: That’s so true.

Dr. Steven Hotze: …end up making a whole lot of money and all of a sudden, as you enter the so called golden years of life, you can’t enjoy them.

Peggy: I know it. And I’ve looked forward to this time of my life, all my life. So let’s see, I came to the clinic, made the appointment…

Dr. Steven Hotze: You tell me when you came in, what did you expect as far as the atmosphere when you came in? What was it like when you came in?

Peggy: I didn’t know what to expect. I walked in and of course was greeted by Becky who is just the greeting person deluxe.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Right. She’s our concierge in the reception area.

Peggy: She is wonderful. Made me feel so welcomed. It was like everyone was waiting for me. They knew my name, they had everything organized, ready for me to go through the day. It took, I was here most of the day. I have never liked needles, and I was like, “Oh gosh, they’ve got to take my blood. I know they do.” I know my blood has been taken through the years and I know people have been gentle, but nothing like Lydia.

Dr. Steven Hotze: She’s great, isn’t she?

Peggy: She is written at the top of my chart. No one will take my blood like Lydia. She is unbelievable. Just little details like that. And then the nurses, I met Ivy in the pharmacy and she introduced herself, “I am now your personal pharmacist.” And I thought, “I’ve never had a personal pharmacist.” The vitamin girls, that vitamin shop is great. I just love those girls.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Now, you met with Dr. Ellsworth?

Peggy: I was going to say, and then there’s Dr. Ellsworth. And what a gentleman. I immediately could tell he was intelligent and very caring. I have felt very cared for at your clinic. And I relate the word care with love. And it was, you all were waiting on me. And so I have felt very loved since I’ve started coming here. Dr. Ellsworth talked to me for, I guess we had an hour, at least the two of us, just him getting to know my health history, like you and I are talking. And anyway, by the end of the day, he had come back with my special…

Dr. Steven Hotze: Protocol.

Peggy: Protocol. Yes. For only me. After everything, I had told him my blood work, everything. So I was very impressed. Everything is done that one day. And I was on my way after one day being here.

Dr. Steven Hotze: And of course you had a nice notebook with all the recommendations.

Peggy: Yes.

Dr. Steven Hotze: So what we did is, the first and foremost thing we think is the most important thing we can help an individual do is get them on a good, healthy eating lifestyle. Most Americans, as you’re well aware because you’re in the food industry, we overeat in America and that can lead to a whole bunch of health problems, especially when we use a lot of processed food and a lot of fast food. And it has an adverse effect on our health. So we know if we can clean up, help somebody get on track to clean up their eating program, that can have a dramatic impact upon them.

Peggy: Absolutely.

family preparing healthy meals in kitchenDr. Steven Hotze: So, we got you on a yeast-free eating program.

Peggy: That was the first thing he suggested I do. I have, through the years, I have fought weight back and forth. I’ve been on other programs. I’ve tried to do the best I can, but, I’m a Texas girl, I like Mexican food and barbecue and chicken, rice and steak. And anyway, I love to cook, I had to change my kitchen. It took a while, probably a month for me to totally change out my kitchen, in that I needed to change my oils, I got coconut oil, just little things. You gave me a cookbook, it was part of the program. I’ll tell you what saved me, was making my own hummus. I love your hummus recipe.

Dr. Steven Hotze: That’s great.

Peggy: And it’s done without olive oil, which is interesting.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Yes.

Peggy: Yes. Usually there’s so much olive oil. I love olive oil.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Yes. Olive oil’s good for you.

Peggy: Yes, it is. But it just, everything was there. All the tools for me to get started.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Well, I know this too, we also evaluated you and you had the signs and symptoms of low thyroid.

Peggy: Yes, I did.

Dr. Steven Hotze: And while your blood tests may fall within a wide range of normal as yours did, you still had the clinical symptoms of low thyroid and our philosophy is, if people have the signs and symptoms of low thyroid, we ought to give them at least a therapeutic trial, because we know as people age, their thyroid levels begin to decline. And thyroid is what enables your cells to use and produce energy. It’s a spark plug, really that makes the cells produce electrical energy that gives you vitality. It’s electricity in our body. You go to a party and you ever heard the expression, “Boy, they’re a live wire.”?

Peggy: I’ve heard that a few times.

Dr. Steven Hotze: You probably were a live wire one time, I bet.

Peggy: Way back when.

Dr. Steven Hotze: And what happens as individuals get older and they don’t produce enough energy because their thyroid levels go down and their hormones decline and become imbalanced and then they go away and they’re not eating the right food, and that poisons the cells. And so, they become toxic and they don’t produce enough vital electrical energy in their bodies. And so, they become low voltage. And you had all the signs and symptoms of being a low voltage individual after having had energy in your life.

And all of a sudden, as you’re maturing, you noticed that you’re declining. And that’s very common, but it’s not necessary for that to occur. If you address the underlying problems, healthy eating, replenishment of your hormones with natural thyroid and natural female hormones, and then get you on a good vitamin and mineral program to help you.

And then of course, you’re responsible to do your own exercise and we don’t recommend jogging or running miles every day, but get out and walk a couple miles every day and get some…move around. You can jump rope, you can do bicycling, you can do treadmills, you can swim, whatever, but just do some exercise on a regular basis. And that will help keep your body active. That’s very important. So, it’s been six months now, tell me how you doing?

Peggy’s Results

Peggy: Well, I noticed, let’s see, I got up out of my chair, watching TV, husband, his chair next to mine, about three weeks into the program and I stood up and it was like, “I just stood up and nothing hurt.” And I sat back down, stood back up again, and its like, “Oh wow.” I have been in so much pain for so long, and not pain, but just an uncomfortable…I just didn’t have the…it just was not the way I wanted to feel. Anyway, it was gone. It has not come back. I look at stairs and it’s like, “Watch this.” I go upstairs, I don’t run upstairs. But it doesn’t hurt to go upstairs anymore. And that was just something that was like, “I can’t believe.” I remember my grandmother not wanting to go upstairs.” It’s like, “I can’t be like this yet. I’ve got three little grandsons.”

Dr. Steven Hotze: How about your overall energy?

Peggy: Well, oh, it is back. I’ve always enjoyed naps. And then I started taking way too many. Now I do still take a nap, but it’s a treat, I don’t have to at all. But I’ll tell you what, Dr. Ellsworth suggested I do a in-home sleep study. I didn’t know they were out there. That came back, it was a two night study, everything was done, it was so simple. It came back, I was severe sleep apnea. And that’s what was happening at night with my headaches. I was holding my breath when I dreamed, I guess I quit breathing. So headaches are gone, I do not like headaches.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Did you get on a CPAP machine?

Peggy: I did. And I love it. I did not think I would, but I have a little routine now. Let’s see, I was put on some several supplements. I feel like I’m bulletproof. And I know I shouldn’t, but I feel that way.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Let me ask you, when you came in, on a scale of zero to 10, 10 being brimming with energy, zero, no energy. When you first came in, what was your energy level when you look back?

Peggy: Oh, three, two to three. Yes.

Dr. Steven Hotze: And how would you rate your energy level now?

Peggy: Now, I’d say it’s nine. I don’t know if it’ll ever be a 10 again, but if this is the best I can be at 66, I’m good with it.

Dr. Steven Hotze: And what about your weight? Have you had any improvement with that?

Peggy: I cannot believe this, that diet..

Dr. Steven Hotze: Yeast-free eating.

Peggy: Yeast-free eating, that kicked it off and then I’ve been watching, it gets you into the mode of watching what you eat and being just very aware. I’m down 25 to 30 pounds in six months.

Dr. Steven Hotze: That’s wonderful. That’s tremendous.

Peggy: And I cannot believe it. I am in some of my old favorite clothes, and then I’m getting some new favorite clothes.

Dr. Steven Hotze: There you go.

Peggy: Find some new ones.

Dr. Steven Hotze: That’s good.

Peggy: So, I’m down, enough that people are very aware of, “What’s going on?” And it’s…

Dr. Steven Hotze: You’ll know you’re doing well when your friends come by, “Well, don’t lose any more weight. You’re losing too much. You’re fine.” Because they’re overweight and you’re…

Intermittent Fasting

Peggy: Well, I know it. I know. Well, it’s been interesting because I’ve had an energy through all this time. Usually when you’re losing weight, it’s like, “Oh gosh, you can’t eat.” You have to starve yourself or whatever, eat certain things or salad only. It’s not like that. It has not been like that with me. You all have taught me so much, the intermittent fasting.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Fasting. That’s really key.

Peggy: That is if I could tell people one thing, if they could start doing, try that, you have to work up to it, but it really makes a difference or did with me.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Right. And by intermittent fasting, we’re talking about eating primarily one meal a day or eating between a four hour time period and have 20 hours where you’re not eating. And most people go like, “How can that possibly be, because we’re so used to big breakfast in the morning with cereal and donuts and rolls and coffee, cake and all that. And then snacking in the middle of the day and then having a lunch and a big dinner, and maybe a snack after dinner?”

And, it’s obvious why people have a weight problem. If you’re spending your time eating, obviously that, especially the carbohydrates get converted to sugar and sugar gets converted to adipose tissue, better known as fat. And so, intermittent fasting allows your body to go through autophagy, which means it gets rid of all the poisons and toxins that your body’s built up. When you’re eating all the time, your body’s overacting and the cells are overproducing proteins and cellular products.

They’ve got to be expelled. And intermittent fasting really allows your body to clean itself out and clean up. And, I personally, I eat one meal a day. I eat dinner in the evening every day and that’s basically it. And I’ve done this for years and I’m within two pounds of my weight in high school, plus or minus two pounds. And my wife’s the same way. As a matter of fact, my wife she’ll go on times, where she’ll go for a two day fast. Sunday night, she’ll have dinner, won’t eat again until Tuesday.

Peggy: Wow.

Dr. Steven Hotze: And she looks great. She’s 72 and looks like a million dollars.

Peggy: I bet. I’m going to work up to that.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Yes. You can do that.

Peggy: I’m going to work up to that.

Dr. Steven Hotze: So, well, this is a great story. And…

Peggy: There’s one, if I can mention…

Dr. Steven Hotze: Sure.

Peggy: I had tried to figure out what I needed and with supplements myself and whatever, and you all do your own compounding here with so much. And that interested me, you all have given me so much knowledge and so much to work with. I didn’t realize that you take one supplement to help another one absorb, I didn’t know that. You all put me on a K2 to help with my vitamin D, is that right?

Dr. Steven Hotze: Yes.

Peggy: And my vitamin D is huge in six months.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Yes. It’s come up really nicely.

Peggy: It has.

Dr. Steven Hotze: I noticed that on your blood test.

Peggy: I know. And see, I’ve been taking vitamin D, that’s all the doctor told me to take.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Well, you have to take adequate amounts. We normally put most of our guests on 10,000 International Units a day, trying to get their levels between 70 and 100d. Most people come in with very low vitamin D levels. And vitamin D of course is very important for bone health and not only bone health, but also your immune health. It’s very important. And in fact, it’s one of the key things that people needed when they are contract viral illnesses. They need to have plenty of vitamin D, whether it’s COVID or flu or whatever is going around. Vitamin D is very helpful for the immune system. So, good for you for getting your levels up.

Peggy: Well, I’m trying to just figure it out, you all have shown me magnesium. I had never taken magnesium before. My body absorbed that magnesium immediately. I could tell the first night I took it.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Well and magnesium is so critical, it’s important for blood pressure. It helps relax the smooth muscles in the body, and it helps with bowel function. And it’s very, very important mineral. Most people are very low in it. Well, listen, thanks for joining us today, Peggy.

Peggy: Thank you.

Dr. Steven Hotze: Congratulations to you. And if any of you want to get on a path of health and wellness like Peggy has, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 281-698-8698. Thanks so much for joining us today.

Peggy: Thank you.
