5 Causes of Stress, Low Energy, and Lack of Focus in Teens

August 18, 2022

smiling teenage boys and girlsDo you have a teenager who is suffering with stress, anxiety, lack of focus, and low energy?  Are they struggling with their school work?  Are they feeling depressed and discouraged because they are not able to accomplish their goals?

Teens should be filled with energy and enthusiasm during this time in their life, and if they’re not, then it’s important to find the underlying cause so you can help them feel their best. You want your children to have confidence and energy for the entire school year. Getting them on a path to health and wellness, naturally, will help to ensure a bright, healthy successful future!

5 Causes of Stress, Low Energy, and Lack of Focus in Teens

1. HYPOTHYROIDISM

While it is usually adults who experience symptoms of hormone decline, this can also happen to children. They are not too young to have hypothyroidism or hormone deficiencies that can negatively affect their health and well-being.

Common Symptoms of Low Thyroid Function

  • Loss of energy/fatigue
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Difficulty concentrating and short term memory loss
  • Weight gain
  • Fluid retention
  • Enlarged tongue with teeth indentations
  • Cold extremities and cold sensitivity
  • Cold intolerance
  • Hair loss
  • Dry skin
  • Brittle fingernails with ridging
  • Low basal body temperature
  • Elevated cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Depression or mood swings
  • Constipation
  • Muscle pain and cramps
  • Joint pain
  • Tiredness after a full night’s sleep
  • Recurrent and chronic infections
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Headaches
  • Enlarged thyroid gland

2. ADRENAL FATIGUE

Adrenal fatigue occurs when the adrenal glands cannot produce enough cortisol to meet the demands of the body.

Common Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue

  • Severe fatigue – the number one symptom of adrenal fatigue
  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Hair loss
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness upon standing
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Heart palpitations
  • Difficulty “bouncing back” from stress
  • Recurrent infections
  • Allergies and/or asthma
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Cold and heat intolerance
  • Depression
  • Headaches

3. UNHEALTHY EATING HABITS AND POOR NUTRITION

The food your teen eats has a direct effect on how he or she feels. It is important to avoid fast food and processed food as much as possible. Eliminate sugar and simple carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, chips, crackers, donuts, cookies, pizza, and so on.

We recommend a Yeast-Free Eating Program, not just for the kids, but for the whole family. The yeast-free eating program involves eliminating sugar and simple carbohydrates, and eating real food, such as organic fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meat and nuts, to give the body the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.

Healthy Snack Ideas for Your Teen

Spread peanut butter on apple slices or celery. If allergic to peanuts, then there are other healthy options such as almond butter and cashew butter.

Hummus makes a great dip for veggies. Try our yeast-free cilantro garlic hummus recipe and our yeast-free roasted red pepper hummus recipe – they are both delicious!

mixed raw nuts

Raw nuts make a great snack, such as almonds, pecans, macadamia nuts, cashews, walnuts…and they are easy to take with you on the go. Most nuts, especially walnuts, contain omega-3s which are great for your brain.

Supplements for Brain Health

There are some supplements that can help to enhance overall health including brain function, such as fish oil, Dr. Hotze’s Teen Pak, and Nutri-Kids, a multi-vitamin, that comes in grape chewable tablets and Smarty Pants Kids Complete with Fiber.

4. LACK OF REGULAR EXERCISE

Regular exercise is essential for good health. It helps keep your weight in check, maintains muscle tone, and improves mental function and heart health.

There are many ways that exercise can help improve brain function, not the least of which is improvement of memory and ability to learn. Exercise increases brain activity which can help improve concentration, decision making and learning.

Encourage your teens to stay active doing an activity that they love, whether it be playing basketball on your driveway, dancing, joining a school sports team, or going for brisk walks around your neighborhood.

5. ALLERGIES

Allergies can negatively affect your teen’s health and cause symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, chronic sinus infections, cough, eczema and even indigestion and constipation. The top seven most common food allergens include wheat, corn, egg, yeast, milk, soybean and coconut.

Low Dose Immunotherapy (LDI): A Breakthrough Treatment for Inhalant, Food and Chemical Allergies

Low Dose Immunotherapy (LDI) is our treatment of choice for all our guests who have allergies or sensitivities of any kind. LDI can treat significantly more sensitivities than conventional allergy shots, and it has a much lower risk of a serious allergic reaction (like anaphylaxis) because the dose is so small. LDI can be safely used in both adults and children.

LDI is a unique therapy that has much broader effects, acts faster and is longer lasting than conventional allergy treatments. Rather than the 20–40 inhalant allergens in allergy drops and shots, LDI desensitizes you to more than 300 common airborne irritants, foods and chemicals.

LDI is Effective for Multiple Conditions

LDI can be used for the treatment of a broad range of allergies, sensitivities and related symptoms, including the following:

Respiratory: Hay fever, asthma, chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, cough, ear infections and postnasal drip.
Skin: Eczema, hives and itchy skin.
Food: Immediate and delayed reactions to food allergens.

The success rate for symptom improvement with LDI is approximately 90%, and treatment failures are rare. Because of LDI’s positive effects on the immune system, many guests also experience improvements in headaches, mood disorders, behavior problems, digestive disorders, autoimmune diseases and more. You can take your LDI allergy drops at home – you put drops under the tongue – so it is much more convenient (and less painful) than having to go to your doctor’s office for allergy shots.

WE CAN HELP

The best way to take care of your children’s health is to get them on a healthy eating and exercise program, and make sure their immune system is strong.  It’s also very important to address any hormone imbalances and allergies that could be negatively affecting both their mental and physical health.

If your child is experiencing difficulty concentrating, stress, fatigue, anxiety or depression, find out what could be the culprit. Take our symptom checker quiz to find out.
