Fog, noun: a) a state of confusion or bewilderment b) something that confuses or obscures. Example: A common symptom of hypothyroidism is brain fog.
Sure, forgetting someone’s name or misplacing your keys from time to time is normal. But what about drawing a blank on the names of your closest friends or getting turned around in your own neighborhood?
Brain fog is one of the most frustrating symptoms of hypothyroidism. It literally feels like your thoughts and mind are clouded in a dense fog. Words just seem to slip from your mind mid-sentence. Even pleasures such as reading your favorite book become painstaking as you have to read a sentence over and over again before the concept finally solidifies in your mind. Basic tasks at work become difficult.
Small slips that you used to attribute to being scatterbrained are occurring on a more frequent basis. The worst thing is that your friends and family are beginning to notice and you’re worried that they may think that you’re beginning to lose it.
And you’re beginning to wonder: am I losing it?
Before you resign yourself to living in a state of brain fog for the rest of your life, listen up. Brain fog is a frequent symptom that many individuals with untreated low thyroid experience. We have patients who come to us after seeing the “best” doctors and have even been told that they have the early stages of Alzheimer’s. The common excuses given by medical professionals for brain fog are often that it’s a normal part of the aging process or that it’s just because you’re juggling too many roles right now.
Despite what we are told, forgetfulness and poor concentration should not be accepted as just a part of the normal aging process and yes, life does get busy but this is not normal.
The adequate use of thyroid within your body’s cells is of paramount importance to brain function. Low thyroid not only impairs the function of mitochondria, the energy factories within the cell, but it also diminishes circulation and proper nourishment to the nervous system.
Brain fog, one of the chief complaints of hypothyroidism, is also one that is commonly relieved once properly treated with desiccated thyroid. At Hotze Health & Wellness Center we are proud to be involved in the “fog lifting” business. It is such a pleasure to be a part of each patient’s journey as they regain their mental clarity and zest for life.
Are you ready to say “so long” to brain fog?
