You may think you are doing your children a favor by feeding them cold cereal for breakfast instead of ice cream. Maybe not! Food companies have doubled the amount of sugar they add to many of their products that include soups, breads and cereals in hopes the sweetness will attract more customers. In many cases the sweetness is in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) that is cheaper and poses a greater health risk than white sugar., There are more cereals to choose from today than ice cream flavors and kids are addicted to them. In 1978 Kellogg’s Special K contained about 10 grams of sugars for every 100 grams of cereal and today that amount has increased to 17 grams which is close to the same amount in vanilla ice cream., If you must serve cereal, look to your local health food stores that have a large variety of cold cereals that contain less sugar, artificial flavorings and fillers. Read labels (see last month’s column “Know Your Labels”) and look for foods that have the least amount of ingredients. Better yet, serve steel cut oatmeal as a treat. The kids will love the crunchy texture and adding raisins and a little honey will satisfy their sweet tooth.
